What is Nano IPS?
To put it in simple words, Nano IPS are the next generation LCD technology. It is an upgraded version of IPS panel technology first introduced by LG. The technology provides a combination of a faster response rate and super crisp image quality. It involves applying a thin layer of nano-sized particles to the backlight unit of LED to produce a wider color gamut of up to 135% sRGB or 98% DCL-P3.

In-plane switching (IPS) is a popular LCD technology that uses horizontally aligned liquid crystals producing a superior image quality and wide viewing angles. The IPS technology has many advantages over the conventional twisted nematic (TN) and vertical alignment(VA) as they are dependent on a strong viewing angle and come with low-quality color reproduction. In contrast, IPS produces a wide viewing angle, better image quality, and a faster response rate.
Since IPS’ introduction, many other companies entered the market with their technologies claiming equivalent or even better display such as AHVA by AU Optronics and PLS by Samsung.
What LED to the Need for Nano IPS?
IPS has been a preferred panel technology for quite a long time. Typical IPS panels produce a color gamut of around 100% sRGB, still better for many display types. But there can be times when you want to work with a wider color space such as in professional photography,color-critical work in LCD monitors, and gaming. To produce such a color gamut, the panel is paired with expensive, energy-consuming LED backlights such as RGB or GB-r LED.
Another need for the Nano IPS was HDR (high dynamic range), a color technology that enables a monitor to display a broader spectrum of colors and ensures a more realistic display of nuances and color tones. A normal sRGB cannot work with HDR as wider color space is required.
The most talked-about color gamut for HDR is Digital Cinema Initiatives DCL-P3. This color gamut needs a display that can ideally produce 90% of the color space and better handle HDR colors. This requirement needs coverage of around 125 to 135% of sRGB color space.
To achieve this, manufacturers have come up with a way that can offer a wider color space called Nano IPS technology. The panel can thus deliver a wide viewing angle of 178 degrees. The display ensures critical image evaluation by high-quality color reproduction.

How the Nano IPS works?
In this process, a layer of nanoparticles is applied to the WhiteLED backlight unit of the screen. The application of these particles helps absorb excess unnecessary wavelengths of light. A layer of KSF phosphorus is applied thus producing KSF LED which is the backlight unit. Nano-particle layer application supports HDR content and produces better, crisp, high performing display screen. The display then produces more vibrant life-like colors delivering a realistic view.
The maximum refresh rate of up to 165 Hz with G-sync is delivered by the monitor. The technology is compatible with G-sync and free-sync. This allows users to create alignment between the frame rate and refresh rate. The most important feature of nano IPS is the wider color space it guarantees.

Nano IPS display comes with a lot of advantages over other displays in the market. 1ms response time and wider color space are some of the leading advantages. The nanotechnology eliminates screen tearing producing an immersive gaming atmosphere.
It promises realistic visual immersion, greater visual angle tolerance, and better clarity. It also minimizes stutter for a smoother, faster gaming experience. These features make it ideal for critical work in LCD monitors.
That many advantages are expected to come with some downsides too, one of which is the higher cost you have to pay. The static contrast ratio may be a bit average. One might experience more motion blur compared to a TN monitor. Also, sub-1ms TN monitors are in the market but you may not want to compromise over the picture quality.
